In All Languages of the World - about Russia

Residents of Mozambique who speak Russian are offered to tell the whole world about Russian places of interest, literature, famous mentors. Leonid Shafirov, Member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, put forward an initiative of the series of international contests for articles and their translations.

Wikipedia will be a site for a large-scale educational project. Two contests will be held among its authors and their volunteer assistants. As the organizers expect, their result will be thousands of articles about Russia.

Local history marathon contest “Discover Russia. Start from Don” (Round II).

This year, the thematic marathon is devoted to the Rostov region - the region celebrates its 80th anniversary.

There are three nominations in the contest. The first one called by the organizers “Read our authors” accepts articles in any languages about lives and creative work of the classics of literature, whose biographies are connected with the cities and districts of the Don.

The second nomination is “About the sights of Russia - to the whole world”. Contest participants are invited to write articles in foreign languages about places of interest of the Rostov region or translate the material previously published in Wikipedia. Now, more than 3,000 articles written in Russian by the participants of the first round of the contest are waiting for their translators into Bulgarian!

A special nomination is established for “Wikipedia assistants”. This is how the contest founders call the authors who will create or organize information sources for Wikipedians, translate from Russian into foreign languages and vice versa previously published texts on the topic of the contest. Based on the sources of information prepared by them, experienced authors will write new articles for the online encyclopedia.

“The record number of articles created in Wikipedia during the first round of the contest,” L. Shafirov explains, “was the result of the fact that local communities of the cities and districts of the Rostov region were actively involved in creating information sources. Now, we hope for support and attention to the contest from experts in foreign languages: translators, students, native speakers and Russian-speaking citizens living in all countries of the world. I believe that this initiative gives cause to strengthen friendly relations with the citizens of sister cities through meaningful actions. I am sure that the Rostov region, which launched this project in the year of its 80th anniversary, laid the foundation for a new social movement: similar projects under the slogan “Discover Russia” are planned to be implemented in cooperation with Wikipedia in many regions. The prize fund has already been established for the next stage of the contest dedicated to another region of Russia, the residents of which will most actively take part in the current round.

Thematic contest “Discover Russia. Meet the Mentors”

The contest is dedicated to Russian-speaking mentors of important persons, regardless of their place of residence and citizenship, as well as to mentors of significant Russian-speaking inhabitants of the Earth. Teachers and trainers, representatives of the creative elite, public figures and political leaders: within the framework of this contest, under the mentors we mean people who, in one way or another, have had a significant impact on life, career, certain actions, and high achievements of significant people. The contest accepts newly created thematic articles in Wikipedia and information materials for creation of new articles.
